Statues on the Spirit Way

By the way, just in case you were missing the exoticism of Beijing photos, here are a couple I never got around to posting. I'll try to put a few up whenever I'm feeling particularly motivated. These are stone statues along the "Spirit Way," along which the funeral processions of Ming dynasty emperors would travel en route to their mausoleums. You can see it is spring by the amazing green color of the willows.

I liked this section of the Ming tombs visit better than the tombs themselves.

Were they still piping cheesy Western music in as you walked down the Spirit Way? I took my dad here when he came to visit me, and I had already started to take for granted that I would hear Yesterday Once More, or something similar. I think the one that cracked my dad up was Send in the Clowns.

Honestly, I think piping in music of any kind at a place like this is unnecessary. Do they think the atmosphere does not take care of itself? Do they think cheesy Western music ADDS to the atmosphere? One of the enigmas of China that may never be answered...

Uh, I believe it has been changed to cheesey Chinese music. I agree with you that any music at all is totally unnecessary. These kinds of bad ideas are what makes me think twice about wanting to do any kind of touristing... but anyway, at least I don't actually recognize any of the music, so that did help. :)

cheesy chinese, as in chinese pop?! that may be worse! if they must pipe unnecessary music in, at least make it classical chinese, something with some erhu or pipa..

I've never been to Beijing, so I can't comment on the music. Thanks for posting the pics though. It looks beautiful there.

Hi Andrea,
I believe it was something more or less classical (probably pipa?) but just about anything sounds cheesey coming out of those tinny speakers. TT, I don't have any classical Chinese music but I'll send you some cheesey Chinese pop if your inbox can handle it. ;)
